How to Free Up Storage Space on Windows

Without Deleting Important Files

The good news is that you do not need to delete important photos, documents, or personal files to recover a useful amount of storage. Windows includes several built-in tools that can safely remove temporary and unnecessary data.

Here are some of the best ways to free up storage space on Windows while keeping your important files safe.

1. Check What Is Taking Up Your Storage

Before deleting anything, find out what is actually using your disk space.

Go to:

Settings → System → Storage

Windows displays categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, System & reserved, Documents, Pictures, and more. This makes it easier to identify where your storage is going instead of randomly deleting files.

If Installed apps takes up most of your space, removing unused software may help. If Temporary files is unusually large, Windows may be able to clean it automatically.

2. Use Windows Cleanup Recommendations

One of the easiest options in Windows 11 is Cleanup recommendations.

Open:

Settings → System → Storage → Cleanup recommendations

Windows can show categories including temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. It also shows how much space may be recovered.

Review each recommendation before selecting Clean up.

Be especially careful with personal files. A file may be large or rarely opened but still important to you.

3. Turn On Storage Sense

If you do not want to clean your computer manually every few weeks, enable Storage Sense.

Go to:

Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense

Storage Sense can automatically remove unnecessary temporary files and clean items from the Recycle Bin according to your settings. With Microsoft's default behavior, Downloads and cloud files are not automatically cleaned unless you configure Storage Sense to do so.

That makes it useful for routine cleanup without constantly searching through folders yourself.

Tip: Check the Storage Sense settings before enabling automatic cleanup so you know exactly what Windows is allowed to remove.

4. Remove Temporary Files Safely

Windows and other programs create temporary files while installing updates, browsing the internet, and running applications.

Go to:

Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files

Wait while Windows scans the drive, then carefully review the categories.

Common removable items may include temporary files, thumbnails, and certain update-related cleanup data.

However, do not simply select every box without reading it. Pay special attention to categories that may contain files you want to keep.

After checking the items, select Remove files. Microsoft recommends reviewing the listed file types before removal.

5. Uninstall Apps and Games You Never Use

Large games and applications can consume dozens of gigabytes.

Open:

Settings → Apps → Installed apps

Look through the list and uninstall programs you no longer need.

Games are often the biggest storage users, so removing a few old games can sometimes recover far more space than deleting hundreds of documents.

Before uninstalling software, make sure it is not something required for your work, hardware, or another program.

6. Move Large Personal Files Instead of Deleting Them

Videos, photos, recordings, and project files can become extremely large, but that does not mean you have to delete them.

Move files you want to keep to:

  • An external SSD

  • An external hard drive

  • A USB drive

  • Cloud storage

In File Explorer, you can use View → Details and sort files by Size to locate large files more easily. Microsoft specifically recommends moving personal files to external storage when you want to keep them without using space on your main drive.

7. Use OneDrive Files On-Demand

If you use OneDrive, Files On-Demand can help save local disk space.

Instead of keeping every full-size cloud file stored on your PC, Windows can keep online files accessible through File Explorer while downloading them when necessary. Microsoft recommends Files On-Demand as another way to reduce local storage usage.

This can be especially helpful if you have a laptop with a small SSD.

Remember: files that are online-only normally require an internet connection when you want to download and open them.

8. Be Careful With Windows.old

After a major Windows upgrade, you may see a folder called Windows.old.

It contains files from your previous Windows installation and can sometimes use a significant amount of storage.

Windows may offer Previous Windows installation(s) under Cleanup recommendations. However, removing it also removes your ability to return to that previous Windows version through those files.

Therefore, do not remove it just because it is large. Make sure your computer is working properly after the upgrade first.

9. Empty the Recycle Bin

Deleting a file does not always immediately recover its disk space because the file may remain in the Recycle Bin.

Open the Recycle Bin, review its contents, and make sure nothing important is there.

Then select:

Empty Recycle Bin

This permanently removes those items and releases their occupied storage space.

Final Tips: Clean Smart, Not Aggressively

The safest way to free up Windows storage is not to start deleting random folders from your C: drive.

Start with:

Storage Settings → Cleanup Recommendations → Storage Sense → Temporary Files → Unused Apps

Then move large personal files to another drive or cloud storage instead of deleting them.

Most importantly, avoid manually deleting unfamiliar files from folders such as Windows, Program Files, or other system directories. Removing the wrong files can cause programs or Windows itself to stop working correctly.

A few minutes of careful storage management can recover valuable disk space while keeping your important photos, documents, videos, and other files safely intact.
